MiMethox – Microbial Oxidation of Methane in Landfill Top Covers
In Europe, 30 % of the anthropogenic methane emissions are estimated to originate from landfills, constituting the second largest source. On older sites, the energetic utilization or flaring of landfill methane often is no longer possible or viable, due to the lessened gas production rate. These residual emissions, however, which continue for several decades after landfill closure, still hold significant safety and environmental risks and should thus be treated. The microbial oxidation of methane in biofilters or cover soils is considered an effective option for the treatment of landfill emissions that do not meet the calorific requirements for energetic utilization or flaring. Although the potential of engineered landfill covers for the successful mitigation of methane emissions has been recognized in a number of studies, technical guidelines on how to design these covers and assess their performance are still missing.

KLARA-Net – Network for Climate Change Adaptation in the Region Starkenburg (South of Hesse, Germany)
Since June 2006, a regional network of stakeholders from the region of Starkenburg has been in operation, which actively deals with the adaptation to climate change in the region. The progress made by the project during the first phase showed the great importance to the region of regional knowledge about dealing with the effects of climate change and also of trend-setting programmes and plans at the legislative level (federal state of Hesse).

Geothermal Utilization of Burning Waste Dumps
Smouldering coal waste dumps represent not only danger to the environment but also provide a thermal potential hitherto disregarded: so far heat and emerging flue gas discharge unused into the atmosphere. This project focuses on analysing the thermal potential of smouldering waste dumps involving the reduction of greenhouse gases. Technical product engineering emphasises tests of extraction techniques and energetic utilization of dump heat.

KLIMZUG (Managing climate change in the regions for the future)
During summer 2008, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research started the first two network projects of its latest funding programme on adaptation to climate change “KLIMZUG – Managing climate change in the regions for the future”. The objective of KLIMZUG is to integrate climate change and resulting extreme weather phenomena in processes of regional planning and development.
